By Mayor Sam Hosler, Town of Kearny
The old Winkelman Bridge is 100 years old. It has stood up to traffic and flooding and survived. It’s a tangible connection to earlier times, and the Town of Winkelman invites all of us to a celebration of what is really part of the shared history of the whole Copper Basin.
The observance will be at the bridge this Saturday, October 15, beginning at 12:30 in the afternoon. I will be there, and I hope many Kearny residents will join me. It should be interesting and fun.
The Town Council will meet with department heads this Thursday afternoon to take a look at the budget for this year. This is a work session, so no decisions will be made and no votes taken.
The next meeting of the Kearny Town Council is Monday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. As soon as the agenda is prepared, it will be posted at the Post Office. This is also the day I will have my second back surgery, this time on my lower back. I will be overnight in the hospital, so I cannot be present at the meeting. Vice Mayor Radcliffe will chair the meeting.
I am looking forward to regaining my balance (and a few other things as well). The recovery period will be much faster than my previous back surgery.
Last week I was honored to serve on a speakers’ panel at the Pinal County Town Hall in Eloy. I joined Maricopa Mayor Christian Price, Florence Mayor Tom Rankin, and Pinal County Supervisor Todd Hall in exploring the public intent of the Pinal Regional Transportation Authority. We were just part of a program considering the role of all kinds of transportation in our county, and how it connects us with the rest of Arizona and the world. I enjoyed meeting Victor Mendez, the Deputy Secretary for the United States Department of Transportation.
Our own Jean Slater has, for many years, served on the board of the Pinal Town Hall. At the meeting, she was pleased to award scholarships to three young people from Pinal County schools.
The Farmers’ Market sponsored by the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce will be Saturday, October 22, at 4 p.m. This year it will take place on the grassy quad of the General Kearny Inn. Check with Angela Hillan Ramirez at the chamber office for more details.
A TIP: Free notary service is available at the Town Hall Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This service is for all residents of Kearny.
