Wrestling awards presented to Miner grapplers

San Manuel – The San Manuel High School Miner Wrestling program celebrated their 44th annual awards banquet on Fri., Mar. 22. During the awards ceremony, 19 wrestlers were recognized for completing the 2012-2013 wrestling season.

The Miners finished with a 30-14 dual record, placed 7th Place at Camp Verde Duals, 11th Place at Mt. View Invitational, 2nd Place at Coolidge Invitational, 9th Place at Salpointe Invitational, 5th Place at Sectionals and 11th Place at Division IV State Championships.

Freshman wrestlers for the 2012-2013 season were Jacob Christian, Patrick Lopez, Carlos Salas who took 8th place at Camp Verde, and Michael Sanchez who took 4th place at Camp Verde as well as 4th at Coolidge.

Sophomore wrestlers were Jared Gonzales, who came in 7th at Camp Verde, Roberto Guerrero who took 4th at Sectionals, Francisco Medina who took 4th at Coolidge and 3rd at Sectionals,

Antonio Montes, Manuel Reynoso and Marco Salas.

Junior wrestlers for the season were Miguel Gonzalez, Jose Frisby, Anthony Lopez who came in 5th at Camp Verde as well as 2nd at Coolidge, and 3rd at Sectionals Colten Smith, a three time State placer, who took 2nd at Campe Verde, 4th at Mt View, 1st at Coolidge, 3rd at Salpointe, 1st at Sectionals and 3rd at State; Frankie Tamayo who took 3rd place at Freestyle State, 2nd at Coolidge and 4th at Salpointe; Adrian Torres, a two time State placer, who took 4th at freestyle state, 2nd at Camp Verde, 1st at Coolidge, 3rd at Salpointe, 3rd at Sectionals, and 4th at state; and Nicholas Wright who placed 5th at Campe Verde, 4th at Coolidge, and 3rd at sectionals.

Senior wrestlers for the 2012-2013 season were Gary Maestas; Bryce Main who took 7th at Campe Verde, 5th at Mt .View and 4th at Sectionals Martin Rodriguez, a two time State placer, who took 2nd at Freestyle State, 4th at Campe Verde, 3rd at Coolidge, 2nd at Sectionals and 5th at State.

Other persons who should be acknowledged for the fine wrestling season are managers Analicia and Maritza Estrada.

The State Leaders for the season were Adrian Torres for Most Take Downs – 64, Most Reversals – 25, Most Wins – 51 and Most Team Points – 276. Colten Smith won with Most Near Falls – 43 and Most Pins – 26; and Martin Rodrigues for Most Escapes – 22.

Every week, the coaching staff chooses a wrestler who goes above and beyond what they

ask them to do. This includes being responsible respectable young men, performing in the classroom, practicing hard every day and being a great team mate. The following gentlemen were chosen as wrestler of the week:

Marco Salas, Frankie Tamayo, Bryce Main, Adrian Torres, Martin Rodriguez, Nick Wright, Anthony Lopez, Cisco Medina, Gary Maestas ,Colten Smith, Jacob Christian and Roberto Guerrero.

Individual awards were given out to Coaches Analicia and Maritza Estrada who received the coaching award for their excellent work leading the wrestling team this season; Cisco Medina for Most Improved, Nick Wright for Most Inspirational, Colten Smith for Tough in the Clutch, Marty Rodriguez for Alberto Aguirre Miner Man, and Adrian Torres received the Julio Cesar Cordova Brutican award.

The team extends their collective thanks to the strong support system that kept them motivated. Parents and volunteers helped with fundraisers, steak sales, concessions brought the team water, fruit and meals during meets and tournaments. Even though there is no award for being a great volunteer, it couldn’t have been done without you.
