Everyone will experience the challenges of being a caregiver at some time, whether for aging parents, an ill spouse, or perhaps a child. A Caregiver Workshop on coping with these life changes and challenges will be held November 1, 12:30-3:00PM at Vista de la Montana United Methodist Church, at the intersection of Miravista Lane and Oracle Road in Catalina. This event is being planned with Santa Catalina Catholic Church and Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church.
The 2-hour program will focus on caregiver needs and the stress and worry associated with it. Learn how to get the help you need, which will reduce that stress and improve the quality of your own health and lifestyle as well as the quality of the care you provide. There are a growing number of male caregivers providing for spouses and their needs will be included in the presentation. It is often very difficult, embarrassing and humiliating to ask for help. You will learn about the resources you need, and how to contact them.
Presenters include Karen Lombardi, Social Worker (LCSW) in Behavioral Health Counseling, who will provide support and education to help identify the depression and stress that can overtake the caregiver. Carol Wilson is the Director of Independent Living Services, Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens with support groups, crisis services, education and training in understanding the caregiver role. Kelly Raach, Regional Director Alzheimer’s Association, Desert Southwest Chapter will offer some practical skills while sharing difficult situations you might encounter. The Pima Council on Aging will have Caregiver Specialist Shannon J. Reed talk about the caregiver programs and the Caregiver Support Groups in the area. Catalina Community Services will also provide staff to explain the services that can be helpful for caregiver support, meals and possible respite.
There will be time to ask questions. Materials will be available during the program from Pima Council on Aging (PCOA), Catalina Community Services, Alzheimer’s Association, Golder Ranch Fire Department, SaddleBrooke Triad Health and Wellness Resources, Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens (PGCSC) and ALOHA for hearing impaired.
