Former Kearny resident Michael Bejar was named the NWCA New Mexico assistant wrestling coach of the year last month in a vote decided by head coaches from across the state of New Mexico.
“It’s very surprising to me. I had no idea about it. It is sweet and nice at the same time,” Bejar said in an interview with the Farmington Daily News. Bejar is the assistant coach at Piedra Vista High School in Farmington, New Mexico. He also is the head coach of the Mesa Vista View Middle School wrestling team as well as a math teacher at the New Mexico school.
Bejar, who wrestled both in Jr. High and High School in the Ray District, has 20 years of coaching experience, including a stint in his home town. He is a 1987 graduate of RHS and returned home after receiving his degree at Northern Arizona University to teach and coach wrestling before moving on to Gilbert, Arizona, and then to Farmington.
He is the son of Armando Bejar of Kearny and the late Amelia Bejar and brother of Angela Wernett also of Kearny. He is married to wife Trisha and they have three children.
