Zumba? At the Kearny Pool?

By Mayor Sam Hosler, Town of Kearny

I wonder how we (especially parents) got through the summer last year without a swimming pool. Thanks to this wonderful community, the pool is back and busier than ever. Pool Manager Margie Casillas has arranged for swimming lessons to be offered too. The cost is $30 for ten lessons. Please register by Friday, June 17, but I suggest getting in early because the size of the classes is limited for safety’s sake.

Something new is the Zumba swimming group offered by instructor Nancy Hinojos for adults. This is a free class, and is held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. during the free adult swim. Exercising in water is one of the healthiest ways to get strong and lose some weight. We thank Nancy for making this possible.

The Town of Kearny will get its recycling program back very soon. A new fence has been erected by the city yard to control access, and as soon as Pinal County inspects the new site it will be opened.

At the Monday, June 20 meeting of the Town Council at 7:30 p.m., our Arizona State Champion girls’ softball team will be honored. These student athletes have done the town proud through their accomplishment. I hope many of us will be there to display our support. The coaches will also be recognized.

This council meeting will be very busy. There are several intergovernmental agreements to be dealt with, and there will be a first look at the proposed budget for the town. Plans are also being made to pave more streets.

Say “thank you” to Missy Foster at the Trading Post, who has provided water and allowed the Journey for a Clean Kearny Committee to store some of their tools during the installation of 107 desert plans along Tilbury Road. The committee members use wheelbarrows to convey the water to keep the plants going during this hot time. Our thanks also go to those individuals doing community service who have been helping the committee.

The plan for community flower boxes on Alden Road is being honed, and I hope that details will be coming out soon.

Remember that this year the Copper Basin Fireworks display will be held in Kearny on the Fourth of July. This will also be the day of rededication for our swimming pool, and we will be thanking the Rotary Club, ASARCO, Resolution Copper, and all our donors for making it possible to have a pool in Kearny. We owe so much thanks to so many people, including everyone who supported the auction for the pool last month.
