Youth Blazers softball starts season with opening ceremonies and doubleheader

The Adrenaline of Mammoth were a part of the Blazers opening ceremonies as the players from both Blazers 12-and-under and 14-and-under teams, and team Adrenaline were announced.

Players on the 12U Blazers are Ari Allen, Lyci Estrada, Trinity Olsen, Ahleah Arbizo, and Danielle Barajas. Players playing on both the 12U and 14U teams are Jada Zaragoza, Daniella Hinojos, Tara Lorona, Julie Meza, and Sydney Contreras. The 14U players are Emma Alvarado, Janae Ruiz, Nikki Baldenegro, Dee Spurgeon, Destiny Gonzales, and Lana Brady.

The first home game of the night brought the 14U Adrenaline against the 14U Blazers. Julie Meza, the 2012 Copper Basin Idol sang the national anthem.

The Adrenaline batted first to kick off the softball season and had players in scoring position but were unable to bring them around, soon after that the Blazers scored two runs in the same inning. Neither team scored a run in the next two innings until finally the Blazers batters got their timing down, scoring six runs in the fourth inning. With one last chance at-bat, the visiting Adrenaline scored one run and had players in scoring position before Blazer pitcher Baldenegro was able to get the final batters to groundout ending the game with a score 8-1.

Baldenegro pitched a complete game (10K, 2W, 1ER). On the offensive side the Blazers batters went 11 for 24. Janae Ruiz (2-2, HR), Jada Zaragoza (2-3, triple), Daniella Hinojos (2-3, double), Emma Alvarado (2-3), Dee Spurgeon (1-3), Julie Meza (1-2), and Baldenegro (1-3, double).

The Foxy Rockets of San Manuel were up next as the Blazers took a ten-minute break between games to enjoy Mango Eegees at the Hayden Little League concession stand. As game time approached, Dee Spurgeon was given the pitching duties for this game.

The Foxy Rockets were able to score first as Brianna Galarza was hit by a pitch and managed to score. The Blazers scored three runs in the first and Dee Spurgeon settled into her pitching and didn’t allow another score until the 3rd inning as Brianna Galarza walked again and scored along with another player.

The Blazers scored six runs in the second inning, three runs in the third, and five runs in the fourth to bring up the fifth and final at-bat for the Foxy Rockets. The Foxy Rockets did not go down without a fight, scoring 4 runs in their final at bat. The final score was 17-7 in favor of the hometown Blazers.

On the mound, Dee Spurgeon (4K, 3W, 2ER) and Daniella Hinojos (1K, 1W, 1ER) relieving were able to pull out a win. On the offensive side, the Blazers went 18 for 28. Tara Lorona (3-3,triple), Jada Zaragoza (3-4, double, triple), Dee Spurgeon (3-4, HR, double), Emma Alvardo (2-3), Nikki Baldenegro (2-3, double), Julie Meza (2-3), Janae Ruiz (2-3, HR), Daniella Hinojos (1-3, double), Destiny Gonzales (1-1, HR), and Sydney Contreras (1-1).

Thursday nights at the Hayden-Winkelman Little League Field is regarded as softball Thursdays by some as the local Blazers will be playing home games every Thursday in the month of June. Come by and support the local kids, you might see the next up and coming player for our respective local junior and senior high schools.
