Thanks to Britney Smith and her excellent article on the volunteers at the San Manuel Library.
FYI: the San Manuel Library was organized around 1954 by the members of the newly organized San Manuel Women’s Club. Scrapbooks , from the latter, were given to the San Manuel Historical Society for their museum.
The library was first set up in the lower arcade near the San Manuel Miner’s office, in one of the newly established businesses, which offered dry cleaning and shoe repair. Members of the club donated books, magazines, paperbacks and their time.
When it outgrew it’s corner there, the library was moved to the Community Center’s ante-room on 5th Avenue. By the early 1960’s, Magma offered the two-bedroom house at 108 5th Avenue, which, by then, had a 10 am – 11 am story hour on Friday mornings, story hour for preschoolers, which my children enjoyed regularly prior to 1965.
The library grew rapidly from there, with the help of a plethora of volunteers, including Magma Copper Co., BHP and the Elks Club. Scrapbooks of Miner clippings of the library’s expansion over the years are still available there, as far as I know.
Sincerely yours,
