Special to the Crier
Be still and know that I am God…” be still and know that I am God… As our world, our lives, whirl about us at an ever accelerated speed, when DO we take the time to be still? And when we do take the time to be still, do we really KNOW who God is? And HOW do we get to know who God is? Who WE are?
To me getting to know God can be compared with a new couple getting to know one another. We want to talk or be with one another all the time, to get to know their likes, dislikes, values, personality, their attributes. Yes, and even where they come from, their families etc. So too, God desires we get to know Him just as intimately.
I have found, in my desire to grow closer and more aware of who God is, I find His attributes, history, etc. pointed out in His holy book, the Bible. Sometimes I come across a word or geographical area mentioned but since I do not know the definition, location or the background of an event I pass over them not truly understanding the definition, or the true meaning of what the author is trying to convey. Out of my rush to “finish the text,” I have deprived myself of the true meaning of God’s attributes and lessened my knowledge of who and what God is. Knowing the meaning, background, of anyone or an event is imperative to ‘getting to know someone.”
There are numerous names and attributes attributed to God, so, where do we begin our journey of discovering and understanding God’s attributes, qualities? In EX:3:13-14, God tells Moses to tell the Israelite people His name is, “I Am, Who Am.” God, ever in the present tense. When Golda Meir was Prime Minister of Israel she often spoke of “El Shadi..” God… the enough! Not too much, not too little but enough. So many attributes of God to learn about, so where do we begin? Maybe we begin at the beginning with the eternality of God
Eternality of God, refers to his timeless nature. God had no beginning, and will have no end. This is one of the foundational beliefs of Christianity. If God is not eternal, then eternal life is not His to give to anyone. Also if God had a beginning He too would have to have a creator, at which point He is not the one true God. Without the eternality of God, Christianity is futile.
God’s eternal Nature is very important to us because it ensures that God will always be there for us. Whenever we need Him, no matter when we are troubled, our eternal God will always be there for us.
There are numerous references throughout scripture about God’s eternal nature and the following scripture are but a few mentioned.
• Isaiah 57:15, “For thus say the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity…”
• 1Timothy 1:17, “To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”
So, we have begun the journey of discovering some of Gods attributes. I hope it is as exciting for you as it is for me as we learn more about “the Light.”
