Copper Area News
Officials at Resolution Copper recently announced that the sinking of the number 10 shaft is almost complete. Crews need about 60 feet or less to reach the bottom of the shaft. At completion the shaft will be the deepest shaft in north America.
While there is much to celebrate about this milestone, the company also learned of an application submitted by the San Carlos Apache tribe to designate the Oak Flats Campground and Apache Leap as a historic and culturally significant site. The application was submitted to the Tonto National Forest in September. The official process to make this designation takes about six months to a year and is finalized by the keeper of the historic register in Washington, D.C.
Pinal County Supervisor Pete Rios was invited by the Forest Service to comment in either support or against the designation as part of the process. Rios submitted a letter opposing the designation and also submitted comments and letters written by community members in Superior as well as elders at the San Carlos Apache Tribe who opposed the designation.
