Troop 822 from the Tri-Communities ventured West of Flagstaff, Arizona to Boy Scout Camp Raymond. They were accompanied by their Scoutmaster, Terry Newman and Troop Committee Chair, Jane Newman.

Camp Raymond hosted 32 troops totaling approximately 300 scouts during the week of July 16, 2012 thru July 21, 2012. The troops attending Camp Raymond were from Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and California.

The Troop arrived at Camp Raymond on Sun. July 16 around 1:00 p.m. after a six-hour trip. The scouts had their camp setup, swim checks completed, aquatics merit badge signups completed and dinner eaten before the sun went down. The boys were up by 5:30 a.m. on Mon. to start their week of camp.

During the week, the scouts attended numerous merit badge classes and had fun participating in the Black Bear Swim, Tenderfoot Run and Fortress Hike. They took on the extra challenges of two camp service projects, a flag raising ceremony and two kitchen patrol duties.

They attended the Order of the Arrow (OA) call out, a first for one of the scouts attending.

On Tues. morning they arose, did kitchen patrol duty and showed up to raise the flags for Camp Raymond. The troop was unable to complete the flag raising because a lock with a combination unknown to the camp commissioner staff had been placed on the storage area for the flags. A little while later the combination was found and the scouts raised the flags for the camp.

The head commissioner thanked the scouts and told the Scoutmaster later in the day how impressed he was with how the boys handled the situation with the flags.

On Wednesday they completed their first service project and received the OA’s ribbon for having 60 percent plus scouts from the troop at camp; Thurs. was lunch kitchen patrol duty and a ribbon for 100 percent of the scouts in a complete scout uniform at all assemblies was awarded.

Friday they completed their last service project. Daily they cleaned their campsite; hiked to and from merit badge classes and meals and camp activities; and worked on their Flintlock trail awards.

Scouts who earned of the Flintlock Trail Award: Alec Newman, Michael Sanchez, Mikey Garcia, Robert Sweeney, Benjamin Parry, Bryson Soto, Anthony Soto and Kelby Redden.

Camp Raymond closing ceremonies on July 21, 2012 held many surprises for the Troop. The Eagle Patrol (led by Kelby Redden) received the Honor Patrol Award.

The Troop received ribbons for the following awards: Camp Raymond Participation, Adventure Award and the Presidential for Camp Inspection Award. The big surprise was the Troop receiving the first place Spirit Award of three, as selected by the commissioner staff and the camp program director for the Troop, which best demonstrated Scout Spirit during the week at Camp Raymond.

On Aug. 18the scouts a court of honor was held at which the scouts received all of the honors that they had earned at summer camp as well as other honors that they had earned prior to and following camp.
