The Town of Superior held a special council meeting last week to approve a resolution proposing an extension of the Alternative Expenditure Limitation also known as Home Rule Option and also voted on several key management positions changes. The resolution was approved and voters will be able to vote on the Alternative Expenditures Limitation in the May 21, 2013 election and local residents will be seeing new faces at Town Hall once the town manager and attorney positions are filled.

The council voted to enter into executive session following the approval of the home rule resolution. Executive sessions are not open to the public and are permissible by law only to allow elected officials the opportunity to discuss personnel matters and receive legal advice. The executive agenda read: The Town Council may or may not go into executive session pursuant to A.R.S section 38-431.03(A)(1) for discussion of personnel matters or consideration of employment, assignment, appointment, promotion, dismissal, salary, discipling or resignation, for the Interim Town Manager Rita Wentzel, Town Attorney Chris Wencker, and Town Attorney Chad Niven.

Upon returning to regular open session the council voted unanimously to give the town attorneys Chris Wencker and Chad Niven a 30 day notice. Both have been providing legal services for the town for two years. The council also voted unanimously to move Wentzel to the position of Finance Director/Town Clerk pending the hiring of a new Town Manager. Wentzel will remain in the position of interim town manager until a new manager is hired. Wentzel was appointed the Interim Town Manager in early 2012.

The Council tabled an action item to contract with Kane Graves as the town attorney. The council directed staff to begin seeking employment of a town manager/attorney. Graves previously worked for the City of Globe as the Town Manager/Attorney.

The Council will host its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Superior Senior Center. Agendas for the meetings are required to be posted 24 hours in advance at the following locations: US Post Office on Main St., the Superior Senior Center bulletin board and the Town Hall.
