Last week, the Superior Town Council held a special meeting on Tuesday to canvass the votes from the March 12 election. By canvassing the votes the council voted to accept the election results of the votes cast.

Because the three council positions and mayor seat all received fifty percent of the votes plus one, there is not a need for a run-off or general election for the positions. On May 21 the town will still need to conduct the general election to allow the pubic to vote on the Home Rule Ballot Measure.

Mayor Jayme Valenzuela who ran unopposed received 354 votes or 86.9% of the votes cast. There were 53 write in votes that race. He will be sworn in as Mayor in June.

Michael Alonzo, Steven Estatico and Gilbert Aguilar were elected to the three open council seats. Alonzo and Estatico will be replacing appointed council members Christopher Tomerlin and Irene Hansen. Gilbert Aguilar remains in his current seat on the council after coming in third place in the election.

Vote counts for the council seat were as follows: Michael Alonzo – 432, Steve Estatico – 337, Gilbert Aguilar -319, Irene Hansen – 201 and Chris Tomerlin 137. There were 9 write-in votes.
