The Hutchins Consort

Known for its eclectic musical repertoires ranging from Bach, Gypsy Soul, French Romance, Tango, and Pop, this group utilizes eight uniquely designed violins, dazzling audiences with masterful performances which are uninhibited, improvisational, and always entertaining. Few traditional groups can match the Hutchins Consort’s diversity which has been a key to their success.

The Octet performs on special instruments designed by luthier and scientist Dr. Carleen Hutchins, whose research into the acoustic properties of string instruments resulted in the design of eight “Hutchins Violins” ranging in size from the 18.5-inch treble to the 7.2-foot contrabass.

Like all violins, these instruments capture the emotional element of the music, but also have the additional advantage of being crafted as a harmonically matched set. Having the same harmonic DNA gives the Hutchins Violins powerful resonance and the ability to produce a unique array of sounds that add a new dimension to the works they perform.

The ensemble brings together eight brilliant musicians including two visionary composers, founder Joe McNally (contrabass violin), and Frederick Charlton (bass violin). All the music is transcribed or composed specifically for the Hutchins Octet to accommodate the unique sonic structure of these instruments. All of the Hutchins musicians may be seen on their website www.hutchinsconsort.org/musicians/
