The 8 and Under Age State Championship Swim Meet was held March 24-25 at the Kino Aquatic Center in Mesa. Tabitha Kellam (8) and Evan Apuron (8) both competed in 10 events during the two day meet. This was the first State Championship Meet for both swimmers and they did a great job of representing San Manuel against over 250 participants.

Tabitha Kellam achieved best times in all 10 events that she competed in. Kellam’s best race of the meet was her first one where she finished seventh in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 1:24.71. Kellam had five other finishes in top 16. She finished 12th place in both the 25 Butterfly (20.48) and 50 Butterfly (46.59), 13th in the both 100 Individual Medley (1:38.46) and 25 Freestyle (17.23), and 15th in the 25 Backstroke (21.28). Kellam rounded out the meet with an 18th place finish in the 50 Freestyle (39.36), 23rd place finishes in both the 50 Backstroke (49.84) and 25 Breaststroke (27.00), and a 29th place finish in the 50 Breaststroke (59.40).

Evan Apuron won the 25 Butterfly with a time of 16.59 against a very tough field. He also finished on the podium with a second place in the 50 Butterfly (38.09) and third place in the 100 Individual Medley (1:25.82). Apuron finished in the top eight in all of his other races which is an impressive achievement at a State Championship level meet. He finished fifth in both the 25 Freestyle (15.58) and 100 Freestyle (1:18.31), sixth in the 50 Freestyle (35.45), seventh in the both the 25 Backstroke (20.29) and 50 Breaststroke (51.12), and eighth place in both the 50 Backstroke (45.77) and 25 Breaststroke (23.21).

Both swimmers showed great improvements at the meet and had fun while competing.
