By Mayor Sam Hosler, Town of Kearny
This is a wonderful town. When something adverse happens, everyone bands together to do something about it. This past weekend many people (especially children) joined in a long march to raise funds for Matthew York’s medical costs. Other events to help support him and his family have taken place, and more are in the works.
When the Gila River fire took place, it was heartening to see the way people worked together to support each. This support continues, with the Winkelman Natural Resource Conservation District (WNRCD) taking the lead to clean up the tamarisks and replant with noninvasive species. I hope to say more about this later. We also have the continuing support of Arizona State University to make the river area safer and more productive.
And last year, when our municipal swimming pool reached the end of its years, the whole community banded together. We went a full year without the use of our pool, but with the help of the Rotary Club and several donors, our pool has been rebuilt and is ready for a new season. Our Town Manager, Anna Flores, has interviewed and hired the pool manager and lifeguards, and we will have a full season.
The support of the Rotary Club continues. On Saturday, May 14, the club is planning a special benefit for the pool. There will be a steak dinner and a community auction (and maybe some music as well), all for the benefit of our swimming pool. The new pool requires an increased level of maintenance, and it costs more for people to serve as lifeguards and workers.
The auction last year brought in more than $10,000 to help cover the cost of repairs. More than that, the auction was a great, fun event! People turned out in droves, and the contribution of items to be auctioned made for a great evening.
Items for the auction may be taken to the General Kearny Inn. Our generosity will benefit the whole community, and the children of Kearny will especially benefit.
