Superior’s kids weren’t the only ones to start school late last month. There are new faces (and one that’s not so new but is still new this year) at the front of several classrooms as well.
Sent Manickamis a new math teacher at Superior High School. She will be teaching Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Financial Algebra. She has a B.S.C. from the University of Madras in mathematics, as well as a M.A. in Language, Reading and Culture at the University of Arizona. She is a Ph.D. candidate in the Performance Psychology program at Grand Canyon University.
Daryl V. Workmanis the new Social Studies, Language Arts and Technology teacher at Superior Junior High. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University. He is a strong advocate for leadership principles in the classroom applied for life, he involves his students in integrated research projects, service projects, and group discussions. His professional interests focus on Early American History, Ancient Studies, and Relationship and Financial Leadership Education. In addition he served as Cubmaster and Scoutmaster for the BSA and is the father of seven children.
John Ellison, “I am a Superior Panther!” John Ellison returns to the Superior High School as a Special Education teach this year. John’s father moved to Superior to work for Magma Copper Company when he was ten years old, and in fifth grade. He attended Superior Schools until he graduated in 1966.
He got married and started a family a couple of years later and has have married to his wife, Loretta, for 46 years. The couple has three children and they all attended and graduated from Superior High.
Ellison worked for the local mines until the slow down in 1982. “I had been taking college classes a little earlier and completed my degree in education in 1986. I started teaching in Superior the following year. I am returning to teaching at Superior High School as a Special Education teacher” he said.
“I would like to instill in my students the love of learning, with that will come the desire for life-long learning”.
Glenn Winnis the new science teacher for Superior Junior-Senior High School. He resides in San Tan Valley with his wife Whitney and their two cats, Holmes and Watson. He has many interesting life experiences including studying neuroscience in college, living abroad in the Dominican Republic , playing music and performing through most of high school, competing in national amateur ballroom dance events, and practicing practical self defense martial arts.
He was born in Placerville, California where he lived until he was 18. He attended college in California and Utah. He put himself through school working as a tutor, a cook and a Spanish speaking customer service agent. He graduated with a degree in Neuroscience and plans to continue his education and apply for a doctoral program in Physical Therapy.
Glenn and his wife moved to Arizona after she completed her degree and received a job at a middle school in the valley. He has taught the disciplines of Spanish, Math and Science. He hopes to one day continue his education in order to continue serving the community. In the meantime he is very excited to be Superior’s new science teacher.
Don Huntis the new high school English teacher at Superior High School. Hunt has extensive education experience. From July 2006-2012 he taught English and was the department chair at Valley High School in Sanders, Arizona. He retired from there and then returned to teaching for the Coolidge School District. After retiring once again from Coolidge he has worked as a licensed real estate agent for West USA Realty Revelation in the southeast valley. He is pleased to be teaching in Superior.
“I am a strong advocate for preparing my students to go on to further education in formal college, vocational for business schooling, and strive as hard as i can to prepare them for the work world of today. I endeavor to teach study, thinking and learned expression of there individual beliefs and a personal involvement in their own education. I welcome parents to follow their progress and keep my door open to regular visits and contact their student’s growth,” he said.
Hunt has a Bachelor of Philosophy in Journalism with a speciality in Advertising and Public Relations from the University of North Dakota, and a Secondary English Teaching Bachelor’s of Arts from Bemidji State University in Minnesota. He has been married to his wife Janell for 40 years; they have three sons, Don Jr. John and Daniel. They have eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Carlos G. Hurtadois the new Spanish and Math teacher at Superior Junior-Senior High School. Hurtado has traveled around the world twice and has earned numerous titles. The title of Doctor is the one that he will hold in special esteem.
He was born in Juarez, Mexico and lived there until he was 16 when his parents moved the family to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He completed high school there and then continued to Junior College at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. Following Junior College he held a job as long distance operator for the telephone company Qwest. After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a Marine for 13 years. He wore the uniform of his adopted country and earned his American citizenship in 2004. He left active duty in 2006 and returned home to Albuquerque in 2006.
Hurtado earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice and became a Corrections Officer. After his wife was injured in an accident in 2007 he left his job there to help her recover. Following her full recovery he went to work at a local school district in New Mexico. He earned his Master’s Degree in 2013.
