Superior is home to another championship softball team.

On Saturday, the Superior Senior League Girls Softball team clinched the State Championship tournament in Nogales, Arizona.  Within hours of the announcement that the team would be traveling to Missoula, Montana to represent the entire state of Arizona at the Little League Girls Softball Western Regional Tournament.

Almost immediately local groups and businesses set out to gather funds to cover the expenses for the trip.  The trip will cost the league $18,000 to cover the airfare, hotel, food and miscellaneous expenses for the 13 teammates, three coaches and two female chaperones.  Resolution Copper, Superior Optimist Club – #BeLikeBilly Fund, Superior Rotary and the Superior Chamber of Commerce all set out immediately to raise funds through online sites like Go Fund Me along with donating funds from their own budgets.  Resolution Copper donated $7,000 to the fund and is also hosted a community ice cream social. Many Superiorites, local businesses and residents also contributed to the funds.

The team will fly out of Sky Harbor Airport on Wednesday night and will be in Missoula, Montana through Wednesday, July 27, 2016.  The team must be present for the opening ceremonies on Thursday evening and they will also take team photos at the tournament.  The tournament bracket is available online at: www.montanalittleleaguedistrict2.org or www.llbws.org/llbws/slsbws/west.htm

Superior will play three days of pool play where they will play two games each day to determine final seeding in the tournament.  Other states represented in the tournament are Montana, Northern California, Southern California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.  Should Superior win the Western Regional Tournament, they will advance to the Senior League Softball World Series in Lower Sussex, Delaware.  In the event of advancing to the World Series, Little League International and the Arizona State Little League will cover those expenses.

If you would like more information on how to make a donation to the league Western Regional Tournament expenses you can visit the Superior Little League Go Fund Me page at: http://bit.ly/2a703Ze or contact  Virginia Alonzo at 480-215-9144 or Vanessa Navarrette at 520-827-0203.
