On Friday, Jan. 30 at about 1715 hours, the PD received a call reporting a reckless driver. The caller described the driver by name (Martin Duarte) and we confirmed that we were holding two active misdemeanor warrants for his arrest. In addition, we were pending charges of felony identity theft against Duarte. As Superior PD units were responding to the area, a PCSO unit was almost struck head on by the reckless vehicle driven by Duarte (Golf Course Rd). The PCSO unit attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from the Deputy and a pursuit was initiated (by PCSO). Superior PD units quickly joined the single PCSO unit in the pursuit.
The Superior PD units joined the pursuit at Richard and Mary, where the suspect vehicle almost hit a Superior PD unit. The pursuit traveled through residential streets as well as US 60 and reaching speeds of about 45 MPH. The pursuit was terminated when the suspect vehicle yielded at Porphyry and Pinal. The pursuit traveled over four (4) miles and lasted approximately seven minutes with light traffic and wet roads. Duarte resisted officers at the termination of the pursuit and a TASER was deployed
PCSO arrested Duarte for Felony Flight, Driving on a Suspended License, and three Misdemeanor Warrants. SPD will file the Felony Identity Theft Charges with the County Attorney. Duarte’s vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
