The Superior Optimist Club recognized honor roll students at the Junior/Senior High on Monday, May 6. The annual banquet celebrates the academic achievements of the students in 8-12th grades.

The key note speaker for the banquet was Sonia Bribiescas. Bribiescas is a 1988 graduate of SHS and recently graduated with her Doctorate in Educational Leadership. In her speech Bribiescas spoke about a letter she received from Superior High School Alumni Anis Mitchell (Class of 1946). The handwritten letter included an article about Briebescas that was published in the Arizona Republic. His letter was encouraging to her and even though it was years before they met face to face, Mitchell was a positive influence on her life. The letter which she received in 1987 has been a source of inspiration to her throughout her career.

“I carried that letter in my backpack all through school, to keep me encouraged,” she said.

Briebescas explained to the students that when she was invited to the honor roll banquet her eighth grade year, she set a goal to not only make the honor roll all five years to earn her trophy from Beta Sigma Phi but to also make straight A’s. She graduated Salutatorian of her class in 1988, missing the Valedictorian by a fraction of a point. To achieve this goal she had to invest her time and energy, and she also had to make sacrifices.

“Sometimes I had to stay home when my friends were out so I could study,” she said.

She told the students that to achieve goals in life you have the three D’s: desire, determination and dedication. Those three D’s have also helped her to achieve her goals throughout life. Bribiescas encouraged the students to surround themselves with positive role models and mentors, volunteer and to read as much as they could.

The Superior Optimist Club awards students who make the honor roll the first three quarters of the year. In order to earn the next level, eventually earning a laptop computer their senior year the students must make the honor roll five consecutive years.
