The Superior VFW sponsors a yearly contest for sixth through eighth graders to write an essay expressing their opinion on a patriotic theme. This year the theme was “The America I Believe In.”
This year’s winners are Danika Bryant (first place), Aliyah Santo (second) and Adam Navarette (third).
Superior’s winners will be advanced to the next round, and state winners will be advanced to the national contest to win a cash prize and a trip to Washington. Each year over 132,000 students enter the contest.
When asked what is the benefit of having students participate in essay contests, Superior Junior High School English Teacher Cheryl Lopez says, “Students write essays to improve their communication skills, to review and remember recently learned material, it encourages creativity and helps students understand their own experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Writing essays and compositions is also essential for preparation for high school and college.”
And we support that.
Congratulations to this year’s winners and good luck at the next level.
