Superior High School students recently attended a Mock DUI event where they watched a simulated DUI accident that included a talk by Pinal County District Attorney Landos Voyles.

Voyles told the attendee’s, “Someone told me a long time ago, before you make a decision, stop for just a second to think about the consequences. In this scenario right here, the person driving made a wrong decision or didn’t think about the consequences. Right now, you guys are young folk this is the best kind of advice and it will get better as you get older so make the good choices.” This is a real scenario that happens daily, making the right decisions will help to insure a safe future.

Elizabeth Magallanez with the Substance Abuse Coalition and Mel Martinez, volunteer firefighter worked many hours to coordinate this special event for the youth at Superior High School. Some of the students dressed as dead people as a memorial to the ones who have passed on. Students that participated in the Mock accident were painted up so the injuries looked very real and acted hurt or dead. It was a good turn out and the youth really listened to the speakers and watched some of the difficult tasks the firemen, police and medical technicians have to perform during an actual accident.

Alcohol affects the brain including the decisions made, the body, self control and ultimately can cause death. It is imperative to know the laws, stay informed and know the risks and consequences. Everyone should do their part to keep the members of our community safe and to help prevent a possible tragedy. Remember the life you safe could ultimately be your own.

Native Air made an impressive entrance on the Superior Football Field with two different helicopters arriving one right after the other. They did take two students away and flew around and then landed near the fire department after the Mock DUI event. This was a very real scene from the beginning to the end. Native Air provides assistance when the situations are life threatening and need immediate attention. The care provided by them is very similar to the care you would receive in a hospital intensive care unit.

Thank you to the sponsors for making this an instructive event and caring for the youth: Native Air, Air Evac, SADD Students Against Destructive Decisions, MADD – Mothers Against Destructive Decisions; SSAC – Superior Substance Abuse Coalition, Superior Police Department, Superior Fire Department and Superior Unified School District. Special thanks to Elizabeth Magallanez and Mel Martinez these two individuals work tirelessly to participate in activities to allow our youth to be included and understand how devastating a situation like this can be. Please remember when you get behind the wheel of a vehicle you are there to drive, make the right decisions!
