Superior – On the first day back to school, after a two week winter break, an eager group of children braved the windy weather to return to class.
The students reported having enjoyed their break, spending time with their families, as did the teaching staff. Everyone jumped right back into the swing of things, though, ready for the process of learning fun to begin, again.
For the first day back, the students listened to their favorite story from last year, ‘The Gingerbread Cowboy’.
There are several different versions of the story and the children have listened to many, maybe all, of them. Drawings of gingerbread and a group art project related to the story were created. During class, and at lunch time, the children regaled their fellow students and the staff of Superior Head Start with versions of the tale told in their own words.
On Jan. 28, the children will participate in a walking field trip to Save Money Market, where they will tour the store. In addition, they will purchase a vegetable, before returning to the classroom to prepare “Stone Soup” together.
“ Literacy and walking field trips are very important activities for the children. Research shows that children who participate in early childhood education program have less difficulty being successful during their school years. As the new year begins, we encourage everyone to read a story, sing a song or just speak and listen to what a child has to say. This is the nicest gift you can give and it doesn't cost anything!” says Teresita Martinez Olmos, one of the Superior Head Start staff.
