Superior Fire Department to begin code enforcement

The Superior Fire Department will be restarting its systematic code enforcement program for weeds and litter on Jun. 1, 2013. The intent of this program is to minimize the hazards posed by high weeds and piles of litter around our homes, and improving our community’s beauty. Mayor Valenzuela declared a hiatus for enforcement in January, due to the closing of our transfer station, but has lifted it for the impending fire season. The mayor announced a 45-day warning period at the Apr. 18 council meeting.

The most common notices will cover weeds higher than ten inches, piles of weeds or garbage, and accumulations of dead weeds. Town Code requires that weeds and litter be kept clear of property frontage areas as well. Weeds and piles of litter pose a significant fire hazard, especially in areas such as Superior that are surrounded by wildlands. The recent fires in our area should have taught us all the importance of a defendable space around our homes.

The Fire Department will be sending letters to the owners of non-compliant properties giving thirty days to comply. After the thirty days, the Fire Department will return to the area to see if the owner has complied. If no compliance is noticed within the time frame allowed, the case will be turned over to Superior Police Department for posible citation.

Included with the notice is an extension request form. Anyone who is unable to comply with the notice can complete this form and request special consideration. The Extension Request will be reviewed by the Fire Department and, if it is found to be valid, an extension long enough to attain compliance will be issued.

A courtesy inspection may be requested by calling the Fire Department at (520) 689-5671. If you have received a notice and would like clarification, or feel that the notice is in error, contact the department and arrange an inspection.

With your help we can move toward a safer, cleaner Superior!

Thank You,

Todd Pryor
