The Superior town council approved Aug. 27 as the date for a special election to recall councilmember Soyla “Kiki” Peralta at its regular meeting on May 16. Those seeking to generate the recall election needed 128 signatures to prompt the vote and obtained 188.
Nominations can be filed with the town starting May 29 and must be received on June 28 by 5 p.m. Those looking to run for the council position against Peralta must also obtain 128 signatures by the deadline to appear on the ballot.
The council also voted to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with county recorder’s office for the special election, which town clerk Rita Wentzel said may cost around $2,500.
The council also voted on a resolution regarding an Arizona Department of Transportation project that would move two lanes of the U.S. 60 in the Silver King and Superior Street area north of the Arboretum. It voted in support of an option that would allow east-west access between Arboretum and the town without a cul-de-sac. Members plan to attend statewide transportation meeting on June 14 to discuss the project options.
Town manager K. Kane Graves also completed his review of the newly edited town code and sought more consideration and recommendations from the council and residents.
