Summer school students at First Avenue Elementary School in San Manuel work to create a community garden.

  Kids attending the First Avenue Elementary School Summer School Program are enjoying themselves while learning. After working on improving their reading and math skills, the kids get to enjoy arts and crafts, play games and create science projects. The summer program is sponsored by Title I funding, Community Schools and their friends at SaddleBrooke. Science, math, reading and fun games and activities make for an enjoyable summer.

  Over 70 kids have been participating in the program which has included physical education games like tag, baseball and basketball. The pre-K kids have been doing a summer camp and making solar ovens. The Kindergarten through third grade students started preparing a sustainable vegetable garden that will be taken care of throughout the coming school year. Community Schools is offering special classes such as cooking.

  The summer program runs through June 30. During the final two weeks the students will be using the swimming pool for free swim lessons and recreational swimming.
