By Mayor Sam Hosler, Town of Kearny
The Rotary Club steak fry, benefit auction, and evening of music brought many people to the General Kearny Inn this last Saturday night. The steaks were extremely tender and juicy, the hot dogs and hamburgers were great and the auction, as might be expected, included a set of bicycles, three computers, an air compressor, art by local artists, and wonderful items contributed from our local businesses and some from out-of-town as well. There was everything including a kitchen sink!
The bidding was supervised by auctioneer Bill Dunn, who has a way of reaching into peoples’ pockets with his clever banter. The auction raised more than $3,500.
Thank you to everyone who donated items, bought items, cooked the food, served the food, and ate the food. The money raised support the Kearny town swimming pool and its summer operation. There were also special gifts from Misita Enterprises and Jay Wernett, which provided $600 for 10 family pool passes distributed on Saturday night. This is the kind of support which binds a community together.
The pool will open Monday, May 30. The pool has been thoroughly renovated with a new surface and set of pumps. The pool has also been made ADA compliant with new features. The kiddie pool is still not in service (the focus was on getting the large pool ready), but its repair is the next thing on the list.
The Journey for a Clean Kearny committee meets this Wednesday at town hall. Several projects are taking place right now, including desert plants along the town streets and the new adopt-a-planter program for Alden Road. More information on these things will be forthcoming.
So much is taking place these days. Harry Grizzle, the Deputy Chief for Law Enforcement in the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, is our new volunteer Interim Chief of Police for Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman, and Mammoth. He will be with us for three months, or until the time we decide whether or not to have a regional police force for the towns. Chief Grizzle “worked his way up” by serving in almost every department of the Sheriff’s Office. His experience will truly benefit us.
