Academic achievements were recognized at the annual Superior High School Honors Assembly. The annual assembly is also the moment that Seniors await to learn what scholarships they will be awarded. This year graduating Seniors earned $250,000 in financial awards for their high education costs, $134,000 of that was from major state universities, Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University.
Hunter Flanagan received a scholarship from Arizona State University in the amount of $38,000; she plans to attend ASU in the fall to study nursing. In addition to the ASU scholarship, she received scholarships from FCCLA, Cobre Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Central Arizona College, Pinal County Federal Credit Union, the Caesar Chavez scholarship a CTE scholarship and an NIAA scholarship.
Lindsay Duarte took home a scholarship from Grand Canyon University in the amount of $39,000. She plans on attending GCU to become an Occupational Therapist. In addition to receiving the GCU award she received the following scholarships: Cobre Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Central Arizona College, a Caesar Chavez scholarship, the Lopez/Gomez scholarship and a CTE scholarship.
Matthew Zavala received a $32,000 scholarship from Arizona State University where he plans to study Mechanical Engineering. In addition to receiving funds from ASU he also received a $3,000 scholarship from Resolution Copper along with a NIAA scholarship, Central Arizona College, Caesar Chavez scholarship and Social Club scholarship.
Cierra Navarrette took home $25,000 from Arizona State University along with a $3000 scholarship from Resolution Copper. She will be attending ASU in the fall to pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering. She also received the Lopez/Gomez and Ceasar Chavez scholarships.
Other scholarships were also awarded to from various groups and organizations. Angela Campos received the scholarship from the Social Club. A Lopez/Gomez scholarship was also awarded to Megan Mashaw. The Stephanie Ward memorial scholarship was awarded to Alycia Bearup and Ricardo Ochoa. The Superior Optimist Club – Richard Castaneda Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ricardo Ochoa and Alejandra Mancinas. The Silvas grant was awarded to Cecilia Dozal.
Central Arizona College awarded its Promise for the Future scholarships which provide two years of tuition to students with a 2.8 GPA since eighth grade at a Pinal County School to Matthew Zavala, Lindsay Duarte, Ricardo Ochoa, Angela Campos, Megan Mashaw, Hunter Flanagan, Cecilia Dozal, Richelle Villegas.
Patsy Baldenegro of Pasty’s Be My Guest Salon gave three giving back scholarships to Cecilia Dozal, Cierra Navarrette and Cody Scholnick.
The David Montano memorial scholarship fund awarded scholarships to Alejandra Mancinas, Cecilia Dozal, Cody Schcolnick, Megan Mashaw, Ricardo Ochoa and Alycia Bearup. The Resolution Copper Steven L. Besich Leadership grant was awarded to Aide Gonzalez-Morales
The SaddleBrooke Community Outreach scholarships were awarded to Lindsay Duarte, Hunter Flanagan, Matthew Zavala, Angela Campos, Ricardo Ochoa, and Alejandra Mancinas. The United Superiorites, which is a group of current and former residents of Superior, gave scholarships to the following seniors: Angela Campos, Lindsay Duarte, Hunter Flanagan, Cierra Navarrette, Ricardo Ochoa, Matthew Zavala, Aide Gonzalez and Shelby Lopez.
Jose Lira and Hunter Flanagan were awarded the Congressional District One Service Award from Representative Ann Kirkpatrick. The evening closed with all honor roll recipients being recognized along with class room achievements. At press time the school district was still waiting to hear on the recipients of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy Exploration and Society of American Military Engineers scholarships.
