The meeting of the Mammoth Town Council on Thurs. Sept.20 was a long and busy one. Liz Tuck of the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition gave a presentation to the council about the Coalition and what they are doing.
She talked about the recent grant writing workshop, the mobile visitor’s center, Business Success Center and the services they provide for businesses in the area. She invited the Town Council to send a representative to their meetings.
Tuck also talked about Oasis which works with local libraries to provide computer skills education that is geared towards seniors. The Council will be looking into bringing the Oasis program to Mammoth.
Councilman Joe Brewer talked about a lot of theft in town and suggested forming a Neighborhood Watch program. He said, “The “Neighborhood Watch” signs can act as a deterrent and we can use any help we can.”
The Council will discuss the issue with interim Police Chief McIntosh. A motion to approve a pay raise for the librarian and library aide was tabled pending review of job descriptions.
There was a discussion about a culvert that runs underneath Highway 77 near the entrance road to Mammoth Elementary School and the Kids Closet. There is the possibility that the culvert will be closed by ADOT.
The culvert is used by a number of kids to cross under the highway to and from school on a regular basis. If it is closed, the children will have to cross a busy street where the drivers often ignore the speed limit.
This could pose a danger for the kids in the area. The Council will be looking into this issue and may form a Save the Culvert Committee if it looks like there will be a closure.
A motion approving a credit card be issued to the Town Clerk Patsy Large was approved. A
Department of Liquor license was approved for the restaurant Michoacana’s on Highway 77.
A motion to approve the purchase of a business property located on Highway 77 was tabled for more information and discussion. The discussion mentioned that the building currently had two businesses occupying it and would be purchased for $145,000.
Councilman Joe Brewer felt that now may not be the time to spend that type of money when the town is already hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.
Mayor Barcelo said the town needed revenue and the building could be rented out. It was mentioned that there are a few businesses that would like to locate in Mammoth but no specifics as to what kind or by whom.
The names of the current businesses renting the building and exact location of the building was not discussed.
