On Thursday, Sept. 29, the Miner Swimmers travelled to the Oro Valley Aquatic Center to compete in a triangle meet against Pusch Ridge Christian Academy and Amphitheater High School.  The Miners boys won a majority of the races, but the larger Pusch Ridge team was able to outscore them on depth.  Team scores for the Boys were:  Pusch Ridge 97, San Manuel 82, and Amphitheater 38.  A very good Pusch Ridge Girls team was too much for the Miners who did manage to win a few races. The team scores for the Girls were:  Pusch Ridge 159, San Manuel 72, and Amphitheater 30.

The Miner Boys won 6 of 11 events at the meet.  The Medley Relay team of Robert Sweeney, Michael Primero-Predgo, Colbey Stratton and Michael Garcia started things off with a win for the Miners.  Robert Sweeney came back to win 2 individual events (the 200 and 500 Freestyle), quite an accomplishment considering he ran 5 kilometers as a member of the Miner Cross Country team the day before.  Colbey Stratton was able to get his hand to the wall first to win the 50 Freestyle.  Michael Primero-Predgo won the 100 Free and the Miners found themselves in tied meet going into the final events.  Since High School Swimming rules limit the number of events swimmers can swim (2 individual, 4 total), Miners were unable to field a 200 Free Relay giving Pusch Ridge an easy relay win and the 14 points that go with it. As has been customary for the Miners Boys, they came roaring back in 400 Freestyle Relay to win the final event.

The Miner Girls were able to win 3 events at the meet.  Gianna Sweeney won the 50 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle setting a new school record (5:48.97) in the process.  In what was a close race, the team of  Darien Apuron,  Raya Woods, Jasmine Smith and Gianna Sweeney won the 200 Freestyle Relay in a season best time of 2:04.09.

Miner Coaches were pleased with way the team swam.  “We had some very fast swims against some great competition, and look ready for the final month of the season leading up to State,” Coach Alex Gort stated.

Michael Garcia was named Dynamite Swimmer of the meet for his outstanding swimming in the 200 Individual Medley.

On Thursday, Oct. 6, the Miners will travel to the Oro Valley Aquatic Center to face Canyon Del Oro, Salpointe Catholic, and Desert Christian at 4 p.m.
