San Manuel seniors earn thousands in scholarships

Once again graduates at San Manuel High School scooped up scholarships totaling in the hundreds of thousands at the annual Baccalaureate and Honors Ceremony held Sunday at the San Manuel High School Auditorium.

Valedictorian Kadi Monfred and Salutatorian Leticia Velasquez each took home hefty sums for their future educational endeavors.

Monfred was awarded a University of Arizona scholarship which will pay $6,000 for four years towards her tuition, amounting to $24,000. She also received the Worth and Dot Howard Foundation Scholarship ($1,000 for four years or $4,000); Todd Myers Memorial Scholarship ($1,000); Monica Juvera Memorial Scholarship ($1,000); SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Scholarship ($1,500 for four years or $6,000); SaddleBrooke Rotary Scholarship ($2,000); San Manuel Elks Scholarship ($1,500); and the Central Arizona College Academic Scholarship ($1,968 for two years or $3,936).

Velasquez was given the Asarco Employee Funded Scholarship ($2,000); SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Scholarship ($1,500 for four years or $6,000); SaddleBrooke Rotary Scholarship ($2,000); Carey Scholarship ($8,250); and CAC Academic and Promise for the Future Scholarships (each $1,968 for two years or $7,872).

Manuel Chavez III received a good number of scholarships, including the Phillip Clark Memorial Scholarship ($1,000); Todd Myers Memorial Scholarship ($1,000); San Manuel Rotary Scholarship ($1,000); Rene Acosta Sr. Family Sueno Americano Scholarship ($1,150); San Pedro Valley Lions Club Scholarship ($750); Monica Juvera Memorial Scholarship ($1,000); SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Scholarship ($1,500 for four years or $6,000); and CAC Academic and Promise for the Future Scholarships (each $1,968 for two years or $7,872).

In addition to being named this year’s Outstanding Senior, Jeweliette Porras received an Arizona State University scholarship which will pay $6,000 for four years towards her tuition, amounting to $24,000. She also received a scholarship from Grand Canyon University ($5,750 for four years or $23,000); SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Scholarship ($1,500 for four years or $6,000); Knights of Columbus Scholarship; and the Central Arizona College Academic Scholarship ($1,968 for two years or $3,936).

Fernanda Vasquez has the choice of Arizona State University, Grand Canyon University or Northern Arizona University for her continuing education. ASU awarded her a scholarship for $3,000 for four years or $12,000; Grand Canyon awarded her $6,750 for four years or $27,000; and NAU awarded her a scholarship of $9,100 for four years or $36,400. She also received the CAC Academic and Promise for the Future Scholarships (each $1,968 for two years or $7,872).

Roberto Lee received a scholarship from Arizona State University for $24,000 for four years or $96,000. He also received a Todd Myers Memorial Scholarship for $1,500.

Isaak Hernandez was awarded the Fred and Sally Littau Scholarship ($1,000); SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Scholarship ($1,500 for four years or $6,000); San Manuel Elks Scholarship ($500); and CAC Academic and Promise for the Future Scholarships (each $1,968 for two years or $7,872).

Manuel Reynoso received the Asarco Employee Funded Scholarship ($2,000) as did Bianca Dominguez. Dominguez also received the CAC Academic and Promise for the Future Scholarships (each $1,968 for two years or $7,872).

Colton Stratton was awarded the San Manuel Rotary Scholarship ($1,000) and the Central Arizona College Promise for the Future Scholarship ($1,968 for two years or $3,936).

Felicia Medina received the San Pedro Valley Lions Club Scholarship ($750).

Several athletes received scholarships Sunday night: Alyssa Cuellar signed on to play for Pima Community College and received a two-year scholarship for $2,200 each year ($4,400). Receiving the David L. Ward Athletic Scholarships were Shane Kelley, Bryan Valdez and Armando Sierra. Those scholarships are worth $1,000 each.

Antonio Montes received the Pinal County Federal Credit Union Scholarship for $1,500.

Receiving CAC Promise for the Future Scholarships ($1,968 for two years or $3,936) were: Christian Dietz, Jared Gonzales, John Thomas Alba, Kassandra Madrid, Mariah Robles, Samantha Sampson, Mireya Tamayo, Randy Verdugo, Carina Damian, Rene Frisby-Carrillo and Roberto Guerrero.

Five graduates were recruited into military service. Clay Redden and Orlando Duarte will serve in the Army. Jared Gonzales, Andres Rodriguez and James Duarte will serve in the Marine Corps. Their contracts are worth $80,000 each.

Expectations are high for these graduating seniors. Congratulations to all of them for their accomplishments. And kudos to their families for all the loving support given.
