Samuel Jerome Roby with his grandchildren

  Samuel Jerome Roby, loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, age 86, died Saturday Oct. 29, 2016, at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Hospital in Richmond, Virginia after his battle with cancer. 

  Sam is survived by his wife, Beth, sister, Lil Garcia, brother, Jerry Colvin, two daughters: Kathy (Rusty) Shofner and Debbie (Dan) Robinson, and many loving nephews and nieces.  He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Sydney, Brooke, Bethany, Steven, and Alice. 

  Sam is a Korean War veteran , where he served as a signalman.  He was an active member in the Mammoth VFW post 2767 Honor Guard. He also regularly attended reunions for the USS Philippine Sea.  Sam started his own successful business in Louisville, Kentucky: SDF Air Freight.  He loved to be on the road delivering freight.  After retiring he moved to Mammoth, Arizona where he enjoyed taking his quad on runs in the mountains with family and friends. 

  Sam never knew a stranger.  He had a gift.  He was able to make everyone feel important.  He gave to anyone in need  without judgment. 

  Sam Roby was instrumental in the creation of the new Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Mammoth, Arizona and he will be the first veteran buried there.  Services will be held graveside at the Valley View Cemetery in Mammoth on Friday, Nov. 11, at 2:30 p.m., followed by a Wake at the Roby residence.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
