Roy Gilbert Nunez

  Roy G. Nunez, 75, passed away on Jan. 16, 2020, surrounded by family and friends at Banner Casa Grande Hospital. He resided in Arizona City, Arizona with his daughter, Diana, and son-in-law, Travis. 

  He was born on Feb. 14, 1944 in Superior, Arizona, the son of Teodoro Ruiz Nunez and Olivia Q. (Quijada) Nunez. He attended Superior High School. He was married April 22, 1963 to Barbara Toner. He and his family lived in Superior until moving to Mesa in 1974. He began working for Magma Copper Company in 1964. He continued to work for Magma/BHP as a Journeyman 1st Class Mechanic for 29 years. He then worked for CCA in Florence, Arizona as a Correctional Officer until July 2002. 

  Roy’s favorite things included: Jeeps and four-wheeling, camping, fishing and hunting. Some of his fondest memories are of the Easter picnics/camp-outs held at the Sand Wash just outside of Superior with family and friends, which was also near where his parents’ ranch had been before they moved into Superior. They owned the XXX Bar and Café. 

  Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he is survived by his three daughters, Diana Byrd, Donna Wright and Denise Beverage; grandchildren, Joshua Wright, Arianna Pastrano-Velasquez, J.D. Beverage and Alexa Beverage; great-grandchildren, Daniel Velasquez, Deanna Velasquez and Ellie Beverage. He was preceded in death by his parents, Teodoro and Olivia, as well as brothers, Arthur and Michael; and sister:,Mercy.

  Mass will be held Feb. 22, 2020 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Superior, Arizona at 11 a.m. Doors will open at 10 a.m. 

  Interment will be at the Town of Florence Cemetery. 300 E. Salazar Rd., Florence, immediately following the Mass.
