Richard M. Hernandez

  Richard M. Hernandez, 71, of Superior, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019 at Banner Baywood Hospital in Mesa, Arizona. 

  He was born on April 27, 1948, in Jerome, Arizona, the son of Benjamin and Katie Hernandez. Richard grew up in Superior, Arizona, and graduated from Superior High School with the class of 1966. On Jan. 15, 1968 he was united in marriage to Sylvia Hernandez in Superior, Arizona. 

  Richard served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army for 12 ½ years. He also retired as a lieutenant from the Arizona Department of Corrections. Richard was a Catechism teacher, Catechist aide, Catholic grief counselor volunteer, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

   In his spare time, he enjoyed listening to music, watching baseball, reading, and spending time with his friends, and family. He liked the Arizona State Sun Devils, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, New York Yankees, and Arizona Diamondbacks. 

  He is survived by his two sons, Richard (Nicole) Hernandez of Florence, Arizona and David (Michelle) Hernandez currently stationed at Travis AFB in California; one grandchild, Sylvia K. Hernandez; and a brother, Benjamin (Virginia) Hernandez of Superior, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Hernandez, and his mother, Katie Hernandez. 

  Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 30, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Superior, Arizona with visitation at 9 a.m., followed by Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. 

  Family was assisted with exceptional service by Superior Funeral Home.
