Acorn cracking and wild onion peeling is how you can start. I have a stash of both at Oracle State Park. Check out the wild foods table to get a taste. You can also get to know some of the other wild edibles while you are there.
On Saturday, Mar. 30 at 9 a.m., I will lead a walk at Oracle State Park. We should expect to find Covena, a wild onion, with blue flowers. Mariposa Lily and other edible weeds should also be found.
Following the hike at about 11 a.m., we will prepare some renditions of Apache dishes. An acorn stew will use the acorns, wild onions, covena, wild rabbit, and zucchini. Kool-ade will combine lemonade berry, prickly pear, and honey. Empanadas filled with banana yucca and other wild seeds and fruits will be prepared if we have the time.
All wild food should be treated with caution. Try only a taste at first to make sure it agrees with you. Proper identification is also important.
