Project to improve SR 77 north of Winkelman to begin in late August

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a project to improve approximately six miles of State Route 77 north of Winkelman in late August.

The $2.6 million project will include removing and replacing asphalt, striping the highway and replacing signs from the north end of the SR 77 Bridge over the Gila River in Winkelman and continuing north to milepost 145.

The project is scheduled to begin Monday (Aug. 29) with survey work. Paving operations are to begin Monday (Sept. 12) and will require weekday lane closures between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Motorists will be directed through the work area by flagging personnel or pilot vehicles, depending on the location. Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected.

Both lanes will be open to traffic during non-work hours, which will move to 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. as daylight hours grow shorter.

Paving work will be completed in late October, followed by roadway striping operations in November.

The project is scheduled to be complete in January 2017.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
