I had the opportunity this weekend to accept my father Steve Besich’s nomination into the Superior High School Hall of Fame. It was a great honor; it was nice to take some time to reminisce with family and friends his successes.
Having been to the event the first year I had an idea what to expect and I understood how important the job of this organization is but this time I walked away with a different impact.
This year they held the event at the original Superior High School, a place that holds many memories for many. To be honest I wish our students were still able to use that facility, the construction and architecture itself sets the tone for academic success.
As alumni, we are fortunate that the Cardon family understands and respects the importance of that building to our community and is working to preserve it, the gym looks like it is ready for basketball season.
Having the event there really set the tone for preserving the history of our school, which is the purpose of the Hall of Fame organization.
This year there were six inductees, all with different life experiences. Each has left a great mark on this world that is why they were nominated.
Billy Ong Hing said it best during his acceptance speech “I am who I am because of Superior.” That is so true, the character we build growing up in a small town are things that you cannot learn anywhere else.
The memories you make in high school and skills you learn there are the foundation of your success in life. You can build that foundation at any high school, but what sets a Superior student apart is that in our small community we adopt a different type of camaraderie.
Your neighbors and friends become extended family. When the community has faced challenges those who call Superior home have always come together to help.
It is evident that the success of these inductees was due to the support they received at SHS and in their community. Superior has always placed great importance on taking care of our youth that is a tradition that continues today.
The event this year reminded me that everyone who at some point has touched Superior, through academics, or employment has helped to make Superior a strong community.
Thank you to the Hall of Fame committee for hosting this annual dinner, thank you for continuing to find those success stories that best represent our community.
May the stories and biographies of those you have inducted and those you will induct in the future continue to inspire our local youth. These stories prove that it does not matter the size of the town or school you come from you can be a success.
