Flagstaff – On Feb. 23, thirty students from Student Support Services (SSS) participated in National TRIO Day (TRIO) by volunteering with the Special Olympics Arizona 2013 Winter Games. Monica Ochoa, a resident of Superior resident, was there, participating and showing her true blue Northern Arizona University (NAU) pride.

TRIO Day is a way to show appreciation toward the community for its support, through community service. NAU has been home to TRIO since 1977 and currently hosts five programs; Educational Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers, Upward Bound Math Science, and SSS.

These programs are federally funded college opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree, and into a better career path. They also provide valuable supportive services to students, veterans and adult learners.

The university has demonstrated a strong commitment to first-generation college students and those from poor, or working class, backgrounds by expanding the Student Support Services program in 2008. Staff mentors assist 440 students each year with academic tutoring, course selection and career planning, financial aid and scholarship applications, financial literacy and money management, as well as graduate school preparation.

Founded in 1899, Northern Arizona University has established a powerful legacy of educating students to help them make a difference in the world. With an expansive Extended Campuses program, the university has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 20,000 students, located at more than 30 sites across Arizona or online.

The university is a leader in integrating sustainability into university policies and educational curriculum highlighted by the Platinum LEED-certified Applied Research and Development building, the third greenest building in the world.
