Mayor Jayme Valenzuela kept the Miracle on Main St. crowds warm and toasty with his free hot chocolate. We even heard he provided mountains of mini marshmallows. Yum! Thanks, Mr. Mayor!

The Superior Optimist Club and the Town of Superior hosted the 10th annual Miracle on Main St. Light Parade despite the cold weather hitting Superior. The chilly weather did not deter the community from attending the event.

Mayor Jayme Valenzuela helped to keep everyone warm by once again providing free hot chocolate. Pete Casillas and Chris Ketron were the heroes of the evening they came out and set up and monitor several fire pits which also helped to keep everyone warm.

Leading the parade this year were members of the Red Bear Outfitters. This year the local group was recognized by the Superior Optimist Club and the Town of Superior as the Sprit of Optimist Community Champions.

There were eight entries in the parade. Winning prizes in the parade were first place $100 to the Superior Chamber of Commerce; second place $75 to Superior Substance Abuse Coalition; and $50 third place went to the great-grandchildren of Elda Vasquez. This year the parade took a little detour into the Highlands neighborhood to allow the Perez family to watch the parade from their front porch. Their daughter is currently fighting leukemia. Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior braved the cold afternoon weather and performed for the crowd and Manny Guzman was the guest DJ and Master of Ceremonies for the event.

“We would like to thank everyone for coming out and braving the cold, and thank all of the volunteers and sponsors who help us to put this event on for our community,” said JoAnn Besich, president of the Superior Optimist Club.

In 2014 the Superior Optimist Club will be celebrating 10 years as a service club in Superior. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Superior Optimist Club, contact JoAnn Besich at 520-827-0592 or Olga Lopez at 520-827-4119.
