Miner wrestlers hit the mat in Florence in season opener

The San Manuel varsity wrestling team hit the mat in Florence on November 28th in their first meet of the season. The Miners handled the competition, taking down Tombstone 66 – 12, holding down Coolidge 48 – 24, and dominating Paradise Valley 57 – 18 only losing to host Florence 33 – 45 to post a 3 – 1 record.

In the match against Tombstone, wrestling at 106lbs: Frankie Tamayo won by fall over Wyatt Abright; wrestling at 113lbs: Carlos Salas lost by fall against Noah Hartman; wresting at 120lbs: Anthony Lopez won by forfeit; wrestling at 126lbs: Martin Rodriguez won by fall over Tyler Francisco; wrestling at 132lbs: Gary Maestas won by fall over Tyler Guin; wrestling at138lbs: Bryce Main won by forfeit; wrestling at 145lbs: Mario Sanchez won by forfeit; wrestling at 152lbs: Jared Gonzalez lost by fall against Manuel Mendoza; wrestling at 160lbs: Shane Kelly won by fall over Jacob Hutson; wrestling at 170lbs: Adrian Torres won by fall over Bryan Lagow; wrestling at 182lbs: Antonio Montes won by forfeit; wrestling at 195lbs: Roberto Guerrero won by forfeit; and wrestling at Heavyweight: Michael Sanchez won by fall over Michael Guizeth.

In the match against Coolidge, wrestling at 106lbs: Frankie Tamayo won by fall over Harry Grizzle; wrestling at 113lbs: Carlos Salas lost by fall against David Ortiz; wrestling at 120lbs: Anthony Lopez lost by fall against Steven Franco; wrestling at 126lbs: Martin Rodriguez won by fall over Daniel Francisco, wrestling at 132lbs: Gary Maestas won by forfeit; wrestling at 138lbs: Bryce Main lost by fall against Sergio Chavez; wresting at 145lbs: Mario Sanchez won by fall over Trenton Davis; wrestling at 152lbs: Jared Gonzalez won by decision 6 – 5 over Thomas Rico; wrestling at 160lbs: Shane Kelly won by fall over Jonathan Rico; wrestling at 170lbs: Adrian Torres won by decision 5 – 4 over Justin Lowry; wrestling at 182lbs: Antonio Montes won by forfeit; wrestling at 195lbs: Roberto Guerrero won by forfeit; wrestling at Heavyweight: Michael Sanchez lost by fall against David Canuas; and in an exhibition match, wrestling at 132lbs: Cisco Medina won by fall over Cyson Ferguson.

In the match against Florence, wrestling at 113lbs: Frankie Tamayo won by fall over Jeremiah Mcdon, wrestling at 106lbs: Carlos Salas won by forfeit; wresting at 120lbs: Anthony Lopez won by fall over Kyon Cluff; wrestling at 126lbs: Martin Rodriguez won by forfeit; wrestling at 132lbs: Gary Maestas won by decision 7 – 5 over Brandon Salina; wrestling at 138lbs: Bryce Main lost by decision 7 – 12 against William Garcia; wrestling at 145lbs: Mario Sanchez lost by fall against Jacob Lamas; wrestling at 152lbs: Jared Gonzalez lost by fall against Spencer Clark; wrestling at 160lbs: Shane Kelly lost by fall against Eddie Griego; wrestling at 170lbs: Adrian Torres won by fall over Michael Hull; wresting at 182lbs: Antonio Montes lost by fall to Marshall Tucke; wrestling at 195lbs: Roberto Guerrero lost by fall to Cameron Hall; wrestling at Heavyweight: Michael Sanchez lost by fall to Nathan Blair; and in exhibition matches, wrestling at 132lbs: Cisco Medina won by decision over Andrew Miles; wrestling at 182lbs: Jacob Christian lost by fall to Ramsey Garcia.

In the match against Paradise Valley, wrestling at 113lbs: Frankie Tamayo won by fall over Max Mclinn; wrestling at 106lbs: Carlos Salas won by forfeit; wrestling at 120lbs: Anthony Lopez won by fall over Blake Massa; wresting at 126lbs: Martin Rodriguez won by decision 6 – 5 over Hunter Snyder; wrestling at 132lbs: Gary Maestas won by fall over Ruben Barron; wrestling at 138lbs: Bryce Main won by fall over Mathew Huntly; wrestling at 145lbs: Mario Sanchez won by forfeit; wrestling at 152lbs: Jared Gonzalez lost by fall to Deron Debevce; wrestling at 160lbs: Shane Kelly won by forfeit; wrestling at 170lbs: Adrian Torres won by forfeit; wrestling at 182lbs: Antonio Montes lost by fall to Jesus Perez; wrestling at 195lbs: Roberto Guerrero lost by fall to Johnathan Moroneso; and wrestling at Heavyweight: Michael Sanchez won by forfeit.

Head Coach Daniel Najera said, “We went 3-1. We started the season off on a good note. We came home with 17 pins and won the take down battle. The boys are wrestling aggressively and are being coachable. Majority of our lineup bumped up one weight class and accepted the challenge without complaint. Everyone is buying into our system and we will continue to improve. The strongest trait about our wrestlers is their leadership. Someone is always trying to pick up the intensity at practice which makes everyone wrestle to their potential. The coaching staff is very pleased with their effort and work ethic.

The coaching staff chose wrestler of the week: Frankie Tamayo 106 & 113lbs, a junior, wrestled very impressively by pinning all four of his opponents which included a five second pin. Frankie has overcome a lot of diversity this past month but has stayed focused and motivated. Being injured and bumping up a weight class really showed how mentally tough Frankie is.”

The Miners will take to the mat today in Thatcher against Pima, Morenci, and host Thatcher with wrestling starting at 4 p.m.
