On Saturday, Oct. 13, Miner Swimmers competed in the CDO Classic Swim Meet at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center.  Over 400 Swimmers from 19 schools from across Southern Arizona competed at the meet.  The cool rainy weather made for less than ideal conditions for the outdoor competition, but the Miners stepped up and made the best of it.  The Girls team finished in 12th place with 65 points and Boys Team finished in 10th place with 83 points.

The Miners Swimmers competed admirably with the bigger schools. The Girls Relay team of  Rianna Estrada, Star Chavez, Darien Apuron, and Jasmine Smith achieved a season best time of 2:21.5 in the Medley Relay on their way to an 8th place – finishing only behind schools with over 1,000 students.  The Boys Relay teams of Michael Primero-Predgo, Hunter Hill, Daniel Garcia, and Evan Apuron finished in 7th place in the 200 Freestyle Relay with season best time of 1:43.1 and in 8th place in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 4:01.8.

Darien Apuron earned a spot on the awards podium with a 3rd place finish in the 100 Butterfly, swimming a very fast time of 1:02.48.  Also earning an award at the meet, was Evan Apuron who swam the 200 Individual Medley to a 2nd place finish with a very good mid-season time of 2:03.05.

Coach Alex Gort was proud of the way the team leaders performed.

“Team Captains Darien Apuron and Daniel Garcia had great swims in tough conditions.,” the coach said.  “As Seniors and Team Captains, they really showed the importance of making the most of any opportunity.  Hopefully teammates will learn that important life lesson from the meet.”

Miner Swimmers will host Amphitheater and Tanque Verde High Schools at the Mammoth Pool on Thursday, Oct. 18, for their final home meet of the season.  The meet begins at 4 p.m.
