The Miner swimmers hosted a three way meet against Florence High School and Arizona College Preparatory School on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The final scores for the girls teams were: Arizona College Prep 90, San Manuel 73, and Florence 34. The Miner Boys got edged out in a very close meet: Florence 88, San Manuel 85, and Arizona College Prep 36.
Miner swimmers won several races during the meet. Miner Girls won 6 of the 11 races. The Girls Medley Relay team of Amara Apuron, Cierra Austin, Nicole Primero, and Angela Navarro won a close race to get things started. Senior Amara Apuron then won the 200 IM.
As the meet progressed, the girls won four races in a row: Senior Nicole Primero won the 100 Butterfly, Senior Cierra Austin won the 100 Freestyle, and Amara Apuron won the 400 Freestyle. The relay team of Apuron, Austin, Primero, and Junior Jazelle Sanchez won the 200 Freestyle by the tightest of margins. It looked as if the Miner Girls might have enough points to win the meet, but a strong showing by Arizona College Prep in the final three events and solid team depth was enough to outscore the Miners.
The Miner Boys were able to keep the score close despite only winning three events, individual events and one relay. Senior John Bribiescas won both the 200 Freestyle and 400 Freestyle by over 20 seconds in each race. Freshman Colbey Stratton won a close 100 Freestyle with a surge at the finish. In the final event of the day, the Miners relay team of John Bribiescas, Colbey Stratton, Senior Colten Smith, and Sophomore Taylor Woods was able to win the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Miner Coach Alex Gort pointed out that if the boys and girls team scores were combined the Miners would have won the meet.
Miner swimmers are looking forward to the next meet against Florence and Combs at the Merrill Ranch Pool in Florence on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m.
