Miner swimmers hosted a four-way meet with Immaculate Heart High School, Pusch Ridge and St. Augustine in San Manuel.

As the meet got underway, it looked like it would be a close battle between San Manuel and Pusch Ridge. Both the boys and girls medley relays were close, but Pusch Ridge was able to win both.

As the boys meet unfolded, it became evident that the real battle would be for second place. After the 200 Free Relay, the Miners were in last place with only three events left.

Then Senior Andy Monfred finished second in the 100 Backstroke, Senior Wayne Newman won the 100 Breaststroke and the 400 Free Relay (Newman, Monfred, Alec Newman, John Bribiescas) went on to finish second giving the team the necessary points to finish the meet in second place.

Final scores for the meet, Pusch Ridge 173, San Manuel 69, St. Augustine 63 and Immaculate Heart 53.

The girl’s meet continued just like it started, there was close race after close race each one resulting in a Pusch Ridge win.

The 100 Breaststroke was different; Junior Cierra Austin took the lead early and won by a large margin setting a new school record. Final Scores were Pusch Ridge 190, San Manuel 133, St Augustine 41, Immaculate Heart 17.

Coach Alex Gort was pleased with the results,”Today Pusch Ridge was just a little bit better than us in almost every race, but the margins are small enough to overcome later in the season and the amount of improvement we saw from Miners swimmers was great,” Gort said.

Miner swimmers showed improved times in a vast majority of events at the meet. Coach Gort was excited about the 33-second drop in time that Freshman Alec Newman had in the 400 meter Freestyle.

“Alec has worked hard in practice and the results are starting to show,” Gort said.

Freshman Cita Sweeney and Sophomore Fernanda Vasquez showed some great swims in the relays.

Miner swimmers will compete in a meet at Canyon State Academy on Thurs. Sept. 13.
