Town of Kearny
I am happy to report that the town’s water filtration plant is now fixed and tests show that it is working very well. There had been engineering and construction mistakes during the plant’s construction several years ago, and untangling the mess was not an easy task.
Some solid particles remain in the line, and such things as testing our fire hydrants will disturb the particles, making the water cloudy. I mention this because a Community Development Block Grant for replacing many of our fire hydrants is now going out for bids. Construction will begin later this year.
Department of Public Safety Sergeant Dave Blue had his last day as Interim Chief of Police for the four towns this past Friday. The financial support from DPS made his time here possible, and for Sergeant Blue’s devoted service we give thanks. The four towns, working through an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA), are interviewing candidates for the interim position. The task force to propose a regional police agency is still working on its proposed structure, which will be taken to all the towns, but this requires several weeks more time to complete. The task force will meet again on Monday, May 16.
Making use of the IGA, Harry Grizzle, Deputy Chief of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, will be the interim chief for the towns beginning the middle of May. Deputy Chief Grizzle volunteered to serve in this position, which will be funded through Pinal County for a period up to ninety days, and I am very thankful. This should allow the time needed for the task force to complete its proposal.
The Rotary Club is seeking donation of items and services for its planned benefit auction on Saturday, May 14 to support Kearny’s swimming pool operations. There will be a steak fry, and there will also be hamburgers and hot dogs and, later in the evening, music.
The steak dinner is $25 per person with proceeds going to the swimming pool. Young people will enjoy the hamburgers and hot dogs, which will be at a lesser cost. This should be a fun family event. Once again, Bill Dunn will be the auctioneer.
All the work of Rotary benefits the Copper Basin. The Rotarians give bookshelves stocked with reading materials to all the school children in Kearny each year, provide college scholarships to graduating seniors, and provide all the food for Awards Night (Wednesday, May 11). Rotary provides support in many other ways, such as gifting the Kearny Fire Department with a special (and expensive) nozzle used for particular kinds of fire. Rotary is also sponsoring planters for the Adopt a Planter program uptown. All of Rotary’s steak fries have a purpose.
Donated articles for the auction may be taken at any time to the General Kearny Inn. Thank you, Rotary, and thanks all to you, the people of Kearny and the Copper Basin.
