Mayor’s Corner: Happy Thanksgiving

By Mayor Sam Hosler, Town of Kearny

Thanksgiving Day is apparently devolving into Turkey Day, football, and long naps. But I want to advance Thanksgiving Day as one single day when we focus on all the good relationships and happenings in our lives.

As your Mayor, I have worked with lots of people over the last four years. I’m not going to name names for fear of leaving many people off my list. Instead, I simply give thanks for people such as everyone in our Police Department, Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services. Twenty-four hours, seven days a week, they are there for us. They are extraordinary people doing great work. They are also some of the “first givers” in terms of doing volunteer work of all kinds.

Our town’s Public Works Department is made up of able and devoted people. Water, water treatment, sewer, roads, buildings, landscape, and more things than I can mention is in their bailiwick. They are always ready for any emergency and, to tell the truth, we have had lots of emergencies to deal with.

Kearny’s Support Staff is renowned among similar towns for its devotion and competence. Unlike many small towns, our finances handled and our auditors are proud of their efforts. They handle everything that ties Kearny together, from finances to citizen groups (think of Senior Citizens and Journey to a Clean Kearny) and on to other things such as economic development, grant applications and management, and planning.

One big thing for which I give thanks is this year’s rebuilding of our water filtration system after years of frustration. We had dirty water for many years. Now we don’t.

Next year I know that we will give thanks at this time for other things in Kearny’s future. Grants and some loans will be involved, because we will tackle some overdue things in our infrastructure.

Let’s keep doing things together. Please take part in the Planning Meeting which will take place Monday, December 5, at 6 p.m. in Constitution Hall. Mr. Brad Mecham of Central Arizona Governments is working with us to provide economic development and our ten-year plan for the Town of Kearny. This meeting is specifically for community input. Come: share your hopes and concerns, and listen as all of us offer our ideas. Thank you, residents of Kearny, and have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving Day.
