, a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and community servant, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2015, at her home in Superior at the age of 84 years young.
Mary was born in Jerome, Arizona on Dec. 1, 1930 to Adolfo and Ysabel DaRugna. The oldest of four children, she moved to Superior at the age of 16. She graduated from Superior High School in 1949, playing the violin in the band.
In 1953, she married the love of her life, Manuel Guzman III. Their 1965 experience of the 3-day Cursillo strengthened their marriage and motivated them to serve the community and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She was a Eucharistic Minister, longtime Fiesta Patria coordinator, member of the Altar Linen Society and funeral luncheon cook at St. Mary’s Center.
Mary served over 30 years as the Superior Volunteer Fire Department’s Dispatcher #3. She was an early helper for Project Happy Face which eventually grew into the Superior Food Bank. She was a 24-year veteran of the Arc of Northeastern Pinal County helping people with disabilities and helped found the first hospice program in Superior.
Mary is survived by one brother, Jess DaRugna (Patty); five children, Manuel IV (Theresa), Yolanda, Rosemary, Arlene, and James; five grandchildren, Manuel V, Ricardo (Sarah), Serina, Peter, and Adam; and three great-grandchildren, Emma Rose, Xavier and Ava Jade.
