Mary Agnes Pelletier Blackford

On July 12, 2013, Mary Agnes Pelletier Blackford, age 86, passed away peacefully in her home in Cottonwood, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Anna May Pelletier, husband Robert M. Blackford Sr., brothers Edmund and John (Jack) Pelletier, and grandchildren Ian and Douglas Blackford.  She is survived by her three children, Leslie B. Nicolaus (William), Sara B. Coker, Robert (Robin) M. Blackford Jr. (Tracy), six grandchildren, Robert Nicolaus (Aracely), Scott Nicolaus (Alis), Julia Coker, Chris Coker, Neal Blackford, Thomas Blackford, and five great-grandchildren.

Agnes was born Sept. 2, 1926 in Phoenix, AZ.  She attended St. Patrick’s Academy in Prescott as a young girl and graduated from Superior High School in AZ.  She was employed as a veterinarian’s assistant at a German P.O.W. camp in Florence, AZ during WWII, as a receptionist at N. Porter Saddle and Harness Company in Phoenix, as an administrative assistant for the Superior, AZ School District and as a guard for the Magma Copper Company in Superior.  In 1947 she was married to Robert Blackford and lived in Superior, AZ for most of her adult life.  Agnes was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Superior, AZ and volunteered as a Catechism instructor and a member of the Altar Society.

When she moved to Cottonwood, she attended both St. Cecelia’s and Immaculate Conception in Clarkdale/Cottonwood.  She volunteered at the Superior and Cottonwood Public Libraries as well as the Cottonwood Elementary School Library.  She received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2002 from the Cottonwood Public Library.

Agnes was known for her sense of humor and her ability to make friends with anyone she met.  She was a lover of people and animals.  No animal came into her world without receiving a name and something to eat.  She was generous with her time and loved cooking, reading, gardening, crossword puzzles and staying active.  She is loved dearly by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be missed greatly.

A memorial mass was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 700 N. Bill Gray Road, Cottonwood, AZ, on Friday, July 19, 2013, and her remains will be placed in the Superior, AZ cemetery next to her deceased husband, Robert M. Blackford Sr.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Cottonwood Public Library in her memory.
