Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu announced today the arrest of a 40-year-old San Tan Valley man for the physical abuse of an 11-year-old female family member.

Timothy Barnett, who is a registered sex offender, was arrested for striking the victim with his hand several times about the face and upper body the prior evening. A school teacher noticed bruising and swelling on the victim’s arm and face when she was at school the morning of April 20, and reported the abuse to PCSO. Barnett was arrested later that day at his home in the 1600 block of E. Chelsea Drive.

This suspect is a registered Level 2 Sex Offender for a crime committed in the state of Alaska.

“A deputy responded to the school to investigate the reported child abuse and found the girl had significant swelling and bruising on her face, chest, shoulders and arm. The bruise on her shoulder was in the shape of a hand, which was consistent with what the victim told the deputy had happened,” Sheriff Paul Babeu said. “She said that the suspect had hit her the prior evening with an open hand several times. When interviewed, the suspect told the deputy that he hit the girl because he has problems controlling his anger.”

Sheriff Babeu went on to say, “As part of our investigation, we are inquiring with Alaska authorities to see if this incident in any way violates the conditions of the suspect’s Sex Offender status. Mr. Barnett is being held in the Pinal County Jail on a $100,000 bond and has his next scheduled court appearance on April 29.”
