The Mammoth Volunteer Fire Department has donated a bunch of used fire fighting equipment to the Joint Technical Education District in Tucson (JTED). The equipment will be used for training high school aged students in job training programs which includes firefighting. The students will use the equipment for physical training, and to practice simulated fire fighting techniques while wearing the heavy fire resistant clothing and self contained breathing apparatus. Aaron Ball, assistant superintendent of JTED said it will allow them to save money and target its use somewhere else.
The Pima County JTED is a public school district providing career and technical education in partnership with business, industry and community stakeholders. They are partners with 13 school districts, including the Mammoth-San Manuel Unified School District. They provide free career and technical education to all sophomores, junior and senior level high school students giving them a head start toward college or entry level technical skills for employment. Students from public, private, charter, and home-school or those working on their GED are eligible. The career training includes programs in Agriculture Management – Agri Business; Health Science; Hospitality and Tourism; Human Services; Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security; Arts, A/V Technology and Communications; Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and many more fields.
The Mammoth Fire Department is building a relationship with JTED and may help train their firefighters and EMT trainees by allowing them to ride along with the fire department and train with them. Some of these trainees may then work with the Mammoth Fire Department after graduating for job experience. “It is part of our department giving to the community,” said Rick Sanchez, fire district board chairman.
