MAMMOTH, Ariz. -The students and staff at Mammoth STEM School are collecting non-perishable items for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The students learning about the hurricane as it approached and as they observed the aftermath asked if there was a way to help.

The school put in a call to the Red Cross to see how to donate items and they responded that they are collecting money but for donation items, the school should call World Care. After talking with World Care located on Ellington Place in Tucson, (worldcare.org), the school developed a plan of action.

A letter would be sent home to parents asking for donations, making posters around school, and making contact with the community through the local paper would help with communication. The collection site will be in the Mammoth STEM school office.

The community service project will continue until Dec. 15 at which time, volunteers will transport the items to donation a drop-off site in Northwest Tucson.

This community service project will also help our students by increasing personal and social development, increasing motivation and engagement, and creating positive lifestyle choices and behavior as well as applying their academic learning to real world problems.
