The Legends of Superior Eco-Tourism Festival committee announced last week that David Lira will be a speaker during the history luncheon and will be assisting with the guided walks of Main Street and Pinal Avenue for the event scheduled for Feb. 16, 2013.
The day will kick off with at the Magma Club at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Superior Optimist Club. Guided hikes will depart from the Magma Club starting at 8:30 a.m.
“Mr. Lira has extensive historical knowledge of Superior and the mine,” explained Mila Besich-Lira. “We are excited to have him confirmed as one of our guides and speakers.”
David Lira will join Dr. Steve Sempkin who will speak on the geological history of the area and Scott Wood who will speak on the history of Pinal City and the Silver King Mine. The three will speak during the second annual history luncheon held at the Magma Club.
Tickets are $10 and will include a BBQ sandwich, potato salad, cowboy beans, drink and desert. Funds raised from the luncheon assist with the further development of the LOST trail.
Throughout the day there will be guided hikes, including treks to the old U.S. 60 Tunnel, the Cross, Arnett Canyon and Arizona Trail/Picket Post.
Educational and historical hikes include a geology hike with Steve Sempkin, photography walk with Jackie Mercandetti, Pinal City hike with Scott Wood, Pinal Cemetery walk with Steve Germick and History of Superior Walks with David Lira.
Many of the hikes have limited participation, pre-registration is encouraged.
The hikes will range in difficulty from easy to strenuous. All of the hikes are free to participate in and will be guided by local hiking enthusiasts and experts from the area.
Those hiking are encouraged to wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are also invited to participate.
